Youth Olympics underway as thousands gather on streets of Buenos Aires for opening ceremony

The third Youth Olympic Games got underway Saturday (October 6) night with an opening ceremony held in the streets of Buenos Aires. Thousands of spectators crowded onto Avenida 9 Julio for the ceremony to open the 12 day event that will see about 4000 athletes aged 15 to 18 years old take part in 32 different sports. Several events that are scheduled to make their Olympic debut at the Tokyo 2020 Summer Games will take place at these Youth Olympics, including sport climbing, BMX freestyle, and karate. The Olympic Torch Relay finish saw Argentinian judo athlete Paula Pareto and Olympic sailor Santiago Lange light the cauldron to officially open the Youth Games.
