Restrictive laws from the old Turkey became a thing of the past after the ruling Justice and Development (AK) Party came to power 16 years ago under the leadership of current President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, putting an end to undemocratic bans and practices and greatly increasing the rights and freedoms of Turkish citizens.
