One hundred and fifty pilgrims donned hardhats as they prepared to walk a Lenten pilgrimage with a difference on Friday (April 12). Every year, pilgrims descend into the Guido mine in the southern Polish city of Zabrze to make the pilgrimage and hold a mass 170 metres (557 feet) below ground. They were performing a Way of the Cross pilgrimage, which is a ritual that Catholics undertake during Lent in memory of Jesus' crucifixion. Pilgrims prayed as they walked through the mine, stopping at various points to listen to readings by the priests leading them.
