45 seconds of destruction: Turkey marks 21st anniversary of deadly Marmara quake

Turkey on Monday marked the somber 21st anniversary of the 7.4 magnitude earthquake that took place at 03:02 local time on 17 August 1999 and the massive destruction left in its wake. The horrific trembling lasted approximately 45 seconds and killed 18,373, injured 48,901 and left 5,840 missing under the rubble, according to the official count.
