Villagers climbed up a ladder with steps made of knives and danced barefoot on hot coals on Thursday for a festival in China's southwest Yunnan province. The festival is held on a traditional holiday of the ethnic Lisu minority. It is normally celebrated on the eight day of the second month of the lunar calendar but was delayed this year due to bad weather. In the past, the festival was held as a rite of passage ceremony, but in recent years it has been held at more official venues by "expert" climbers.
