This is what defending your country is. The road to the Yenikapı rally

For years we struggled for Palestine, Bosnia, Egypt, Syria, Algeria and Myanmar. The whole world saw that Turkey was the strongest defender of the rights off the oppressed. These countries were occupied, they experienced coups, thousands were killed, others were exiled, and Turkey was the country to voice their troubles to the world.

Incidents that give society a political conscience

We have felt the pain, shared the suffering with the Muslim world and struggled for them for nearly 40 years.

On the day of martyrs, the conquest of Mecca, the Nakba day, and the day of Rabia... We always shared the pain and sorrow.

The people of this country constantly reminded us of Adnan Menderes's pain, the tyranny during the single-party years, İskilipli Atıf, Süleyman Hilmi Tunahan, Sheikh Said, Metin Yüksel, Sedat Yenigün, Turgut Özal and Muhsin Yazıcıoğlu.

But still we would have never thought that we would experience a coup.

But the feelings we kept alive and our memories ensured that we were conscious and had a reflex to fight against such attempts.

Erdoğan's discourse that educates the nation

In his speeches, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan stressed terms like “love for the country, nation and Islam,” which undoubtedly educated us. His statement, “They will not be able to divide our country," became engraved in our subconscious, hence, when he said "go out to the streets," we all poured into the streets to make sure that this country could not be divided.

The religious youth, nationalistic youth, Justice and Development Party (AK Party) follower youth, the slum youth, youth without ideologies, all helped write extraordinary stories. Everyone, including the villagers, laborers, civil servants, tradesmen and media workers poured out to the streets to defend their country. They made history as a nation that stopped tanks with their bare hands.

So this is what defending your country is.

There comes a moment in which you believe you can stop a plane with your bare hands or lift a tank. That day I understood how Seyit Onbaşı lifted a 215-kilogram cannon ball during the Çanakkale War.

This is obviously what they call the “power of faith, love for your country and national struggle.”

Now we should read about the Turkish War of Independence once again. Our ancestors are those who resisted with shovels and rakes, cannons and rifles. We are their grandchildren.

This is a historic breaking point. This will be explained to generations to come, just like we have been hearing stories of Çanakkale for the past 100 years. The story of July 15 is one that will never be outdated.

The Yenikapı Rally, AK Party, CHP and the MHP

I believe this is the first meeting in 40 years in which the Republican People's Party (CHP), Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) and the AK Party will come together. The three main powers of Turkish politics will stand united and say no to this attack. This is what defending your country means. This is something that needs praise.

The threat will not end with this rally. The questions in our mind will not disappear. Yet it will be a start! There is hope.

Those who oppose to this unity either do not know what sociology is or just have bad intentions. Turkey needs national unification and social solidarity. This is unquestionable. Yet we can discuss how we can establish this unity.

The people seized country's control

One other thing that needs to be realized is that the nation that stopped the coup also helped the economy by exchanging dollars for Turkish liras. Erdoğan had said, "The people have taken over the economy too." The leaders of the three major parties coming together during this meeting, was also ensured with the support and desire of the people. Which means the people established social solidarity and national unity themselves too.

This is what struggling for your country means, the people will take over country's administration when needed!
