Democrats are boycotting the 'Israel Lobby'!

Democrat Party representative Ilhan Omar has been the constant target of smearing campaigns in the U.S. due to her criticisms against the “Israel Lobby.” On the other hand, Trump and other Republicans still insist on their claim that the Democrat Party has turned into an “anti-Jewish” party. The Trumpists are greatly striving to get the American Jews who vote for the Democrats on their side.

The “Israel Lobby” sees that the sympathy young Americans have for Israel is rapidly decreasing day by day, and they are aware of the impact this will have on American politics. Despite all the pressure, the fact that the Congress couldn’t make a decision to condemn Ilhan Omar shows how strong young Democrats are within the party alignments. The Democrat Party, on the other hand, needs the positive energy of the new generation Democrats in order to defeat Trump in the 2020 presidential elections.

Democrats are very uncomfortable with the fact that the “Israel Lobby,” especially AIPAC, is almost the equivalent of “Republicans” and “Trump.” They don’t like the close relationship the lobby has with the “Evangelical Christian Zionists”. Another issue they are uncomfortable with is Trump’s Middle East policies, which are in parallel with the Christian-Zionists’ theo-political agendas. The “Israel Lobby” is afraid to lose the two-party support Israel has within the Congress. Because they know that without the two-party support, pro-Israel decisions cannot be passed in Congress.

The American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) holds annual conferences. These conferences are seen as a showcase by prominent political actors. Making a speech at these conferences is considered critical for the politicians who have plans for the future. The vast opportunities the “Israel Lobby” has, especially in terms of media outlets and financial issues, have been quite appealing for politicians.

AIPAC conferences also serve as a test to measure the degree of support politicians for Israel. However, during this term, there are cracks in terms of AIPAC’s political influence. For the first time this year, many prominent Democrat politicians refused to participate in the AIPAC conferences. The smearing campaigns started against the rising stars of the Democrat Party such as Ilhan Omar, Rashida Tlaib, and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez by the AIPAC circles drew reactions from the party alignments.

On the other hand, the call of pro-Democrats to boycott AIPAC with the “MoveOn” movement, whose numbers reached millions, has achieved its target. Young Democrat protestors are accusing AIPAC of sabotaging diplomatic efforts within the peace process in the Middle East. Under the influence of this wave, Democrat politicians who are considering to declare their candidacy for the presidential elections in 2020 decided not to attend the AIPAC Conferences.

Among the Democrat candidates for presidency who did not participate in the AIPAC conferences, which started last Sunday and will end on Tuesday, were Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, Kamala Harris, Amy Klobuchar Kirsten Gillibrand, and Cory Booker. In fact, Harris, Booker, Gillibrand and Klobuchar were among the participants of the previous AIPAC conferences. These names who are known as pro-Israeli politicians deciding not to attend the AIPAC conferences was quite significant. This development shows that the lobby is losing blood.

The fact that the candidates who did not attend “2019 AIPAC Conferences” was criticized in pro-Israel media. The New York Post’s editorial board, on the other hand, defined the decision of the candidates not to attend the conference as an indicator of how fast the support given to Israel within the Democrat party is changing. They stressed in the leading article that this development is deeply besetting.

The “AIPAC Boycott” broke another taboo. It seems that the changing new generations of American society are going to be more influential in politics. There is no doubt that this transformation will negatively affect the unconditional two-party support the U.S. Congress has been giving Israel.
