The biggest cover-up in American history

The fight against climate change is a bit “too little, too late.” One of the most significant reasons being: politics. The state-governing elites considered global warming not as a “fact” but a “theory” or “hypothesis.” Most politicians couldn’t give two pennies about the disasters awaiting us in the future, because both the past and future are foreign territory to them.

One of the biggest obstacles against climate change is fossil fuel companies that will start losing profits when this fight starts producing tangible policies. Ever since the ‘70s, they’ve known that the use of oil firms’ fossil fuels would reap disasters for the environment. However, these companies covered up this scientific fact and hid it from the public. To add insult to injury, they tried to cast a shadow of doubt over the scientific findings of climate change.

Even if U.S. President Joe Biden has reinstated the U.S. in the Paris Climate agreement, he still hasn’t been able to get Congress to pass the bills on climate change. Calling on world leaders to “join this fight,” he attends the climate summit in Scotland’s Glasgow with not much to show for it. So much so that the U.S.’ special presidential envoy for climate John Kerry stated that Biden attending the Glasgow Summit without passing the said bills would have a similar effect of Trump's withdrawal from the Paris Agreement. Biden, for his part, thinks that Kerry is exaggerating.

The U.S., which is among the top countries when it comes to carbon emissions, has a very “colorful” history in hindering the fight against climate change. Allegations that America's top oil companies are conducting smear campaigns to undermine the fight against climate change are currently being investigated by Congress.

There are striking findings that American oil firms have covered up their roles in smear campaigns. It’s funny, these companies actually have commitments to reduce carbon emissions and endorse climate reforms. According to the discoveries, these firms invested less than half the amount they pledged for the fight against climate change. They have even contributed to advertisements published against alternative energy resources. The majority of their lobbying activities consists of providing tax breaks to their companies.

On Sept. 16, 2021, the U.S. House of Representatives Oversight and Reform Committee sent letters to executives of top fossil fuel companies. They demanded information and documents on their roles in distorting, smearing, and misleading the public when it comes to the fight against climate change. However, these giants didn’t sufficiently meet the demands of the Committee. Top executives of  ExxonMobil, BP, Chevron, Shell, the American Petrol Institute, and the U.S. Chamber of Trade testified in a trial organized by the Oversight and Reform Committee on Oct. 28. This time, they didn’t object to the fact that climate change as a result of fossil fuel emissions is a serious threat to humanity, however, these executives neither took any responsibility for their roles in smear campaigns.

In 2002, Exxon’s CEO said that “science cannot make the connection between fossil fuels and global warming.” Testifying at the trial, the Exxon executive admitted that this statement was scientifically incorrect. It was revealed that Exxon had approved actions that contradicted the views of its scientists on the climate crisis. However, Exxon’s exec refuses to apologize for this contradiction. On the other hand, executives also avoided making any commitments whatsoever that they would henceforth follow a policy that wouldn’t hinder the fight against climate change.

The oil firms summoned by the Oversight and Reform Committee are some of the world’s largest. It was revealed that four of these companies that cooperate with the American Petrol Institute have spent about half a billion dollars over the past decade on lobbying activities alone. The Committee is also investigating the payments made by these organizations to many PR firms and shadow companies, as well as on social media advertisements, that participate in smear campaigns. The Committee is also apparently going to get a warrant requesting internal correspondence.

I implore you to see that the efforts by the fossil fuel industry to sabotage the fight against climate change have been interpreted as the most important cover-up in American history.
